I’m so pleased to acknowledge that one of my client’s works was chosen as a finalist in not one, but in three categories of the Colorado Authors’ League Awards competition this year.
Turnings: Reflections on a Conscious Life is a finalist in Poetry, single poem (for “Stones” a poem in the book), for Creative Non-fiction, and for eBook! The book is a memoir in which Ms. Grever explores her life’s journey as the straight spouse of a man who came out as gay. Along the way she discovered Buddhism and describes how this awakening changed her life as well.
The book is described:
A Mosaic of Courage
Unexpected pivotal events change the course of a lifetime. This book grew from that thesis, sharing stories of specific, transformative “turnings” that shaped an unusual life. Carol Grever is known for her books, blog, and documentary about mixed-orientation relationships and straight-spouse recovery. Now, she reveals with unwavering honesty her own unforeseen history, including extraordinary adventures, heartening discoveries, and spiritual conversion. Whether encountering a gay mate’s coming out, a spouse’s addiction, or her own spiritual awakening, these stories and poems form a mosaic of courage.
Carol Grever is an award-winning poet and nonfiction author. As a recognized spokesperson on mixed orientation relationships and straight spouse issues, she has appeared on major network TV and has media credits on three continents. Her best-known titles include My Husband Is Gay, When Your Spouse Comes Out, and Glimpses, A Memoir in Poetry.
When Carol came to me for her book design she had an idea of what she wanted and communicated it clearly. She also had an image of turning leaves, which spoke to her, and which I agreed was symbolically resonant for the story.
All there was left to do was come up with an attractive design, for the cover and, as I like to do, translate that into a coordinating text layout. I prepped the book for paperpback and for ebook. The ebook also carries the same design, which isn’t always easy to do on different platforms and devices.
I first worked with Carol on her family history project entitled Memory Quilt. That was an enjoyable project and I’m so glad she came back to me for Turnings. Congratulations to Carol Grever on this honor and best of luck in the competition!
The CAL Awards celebrates Colorado authors and the awards will be given at a banquet in May 2017. According to the Colorado Author’s League (sponsor of the awards) this is a very competitive year, and set a record for number of entries. This is the 75th year that this competition has been held! That’s pretty darned impressive, right there! Click on the link learn more about CAL and the awards program.
